Makeup tends to get a bad rap and I’m going to take a moment to talk about it. Olivia brought up some great points in her recent post about ditching her makeup routine, but my goal here is to present to you the pros and misconceptions of makeup. Everyone should have the right to feel confident – with or without makeup. So without further ado, here are seven myths that need to be stopped:
1. Women Who Wear Makeup Hate How they Look
While it’s true that some do wear makeup because of insecurities, many wear it to simply enhance the natural features they already love, or because (gasp!) they like putting it on. Personally I go without makeup at times but I find that I enjoy putting it on and wearing it makes me feel more confident, and consequently more productive. Makeup isn’t always solely about wanting to look more attractive, however. It can be fun to experiment with crazy colors that wouldn’t normally be deemed “pretty.”
2. Makeup will Make Your skin Break Out
Actually, according to HowStuffWorks as long as you remove it fully before bed and you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients in the product, makeup shouldn’t cause you to break out. HSW recommends purchasing products that are fragrance and oil-free, as those types are the most likely to clog pores. A diligent skin routine is the best bet for keeping skin clear.
3. Women Who Wear Makeup Think Applying it is a Chore
Perhaps this is true for some, but I can’t be the only one who enjoys the process of applying makeup. It’s something I look forward to in the mornings. I see it as an art form and just another way I can express myself. You could think of your face as a canvas and the makeup as the paint. That being said, if you’re someone who considers applying makeup a total drag, there’s no shame in eliminating it from your daily routine!
4. Wearing Makeup is “Lying” About Your Real Appearance
With that logic, women who shave are also lying because body hair is natural! And men who grow beards are lying because we can’t tell what their faces really look like! I say we take a stand and stop shaving so these men can see our true selves! Who’s with me?
5. Women Who Wear a lot of Makeup are High-Maintenance
I will never understand this assumption. Unless she’s forcing the makeup brush into your hand and making you apply it for her, what the hell is “high-maintenance” about someone doing makeup? Doing something because it makes you happy and doesn’t affect anyone else should never be judged in a negative light. You do you.
6. Women Who Wear Makeup Can’t be Feminists
Because being a feminist means you can’t care about your appearance…? I don’t think I need to say anything else here.
7. “I Prefer Women Who Don’t Wear Makeup”
I’m just going to shut this one down right now: No, you don’t. You just prefer women who wear natural makeup. The following are two photos of Emma Watson.
Surprise! She’s wearing a ton of makeup in both photos. The look on the left is simply made to look “more natural” while the one on the right has more color. I think we can all agree that there aren’t too many straight men who would look at the photo on the left and say, “gross, too much makeup!”
The bottom line is, we should be allowed to do whatever we want with our faces. You don’t need makeup to be yourself. You also don’t need to be makeup-free to be yourself. You’re still the same great person with or without makeup and the people who are worth your time wont treat you any differently.
